Seasonal Interludes

In Canada, we start the month off with an earlier than usual Thanksgiving Giving weekend. I don’t know about you, but it sure crept up fast! Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to come together and express thanks for where we live, who we are and of the blessings we share with one another. Whether you have a quiet vegan dinner for two or a huge traditional turkey family feast, Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for what you have and ponder on what you want more of in life.

Now that we are fully into the Autumn season, it’s the time of year when many of us can reflect on what we are thankful for the most. In spite of the fact that it’s good (and even traditional) to count your blessings on Thanksgiving Day, being grateful throughout the year can have tremendous benefits for your quality of life. In fact, gratitude may be one of the most overlooked tools that we all can access every day.

Having a gratitude practice

It is such a simple, yet powerful and important part of taking care of our mental health. The list of health benefits of being grateful, and expressing thanks for big and small moments, is endless. Every morning after I meditate I practice gratitude. Some days it’s challenging to find, but I always find things to be grateful for, even if it’s small.

Practicing gratitude for all the good things that life has to offer can lift you up out of darkness. The outer world seems to be getting crazier and crazier everyday, but when we focus on the simple things, we start to shift our perspective that can bring comfort. Even if you’re in a dark cloud, there are often silver linings to find things to be thankful for. Cultivating gratitude doesn’t cost any money and it certainly doesn’t require much time. The benefits are huge and all it takes is a little effort and practice.
